Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical treatment for orthopedic issues. It’s a procedure done in the office by injection.
Patients usually needs multiple injections over the course of 4-6 weeks.
The injection is made up of your own blood. It’s separated and re-injected into the injured tissue. Your platelets release growth factors that help naturally trigger inflammation and collagen production. The goal is to help the body form new blood vessels and fibers. The natural injection works with your body to strengthen damaged tissue and joints.
Platelet-rich plasma can be used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, and hip. It is also used to help treat tennis elbow, rotator cuff injuries, ankle sprains, tendonitis, sports injuries.
Patients may feel sore or tender in the site of the injection for a few days following the procedure. It’s recommended to take it easy for a few days to allow the injured tissue to recover. Patients usually feel relief within four weeks and it can continue to improve for up to six months. The results vary for patients.
