DAYTON, Ohio (IPMD) – Pregnancy can be uncomfortable and can put a lot of stress on a woman’s body as it makes room for the baby. Chiropractic adjustments are a popular option to help alleviate those aches and pains.
Dr. Pat O’Bryan and Dr. Tim Dooley say seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy is completely safe and can actually be very beneficial throughout the pregnancy and even birth.
“There are different maneuvers that can be done depending on what is going on such as the Webster Technique. That technique is beneficial in not only adjusting the spine or issues associated with the spine, but also releasing or lengthening tendons and ligaments that may otherwise be tight as the result of the expanding uterus. This can decrease the women’s chances of having a cesarean section performed. Research would show it increases your ability to go through a natural birthing process,” said Dr. Pat O’Bryan.
The extra pressure a growing belly puts on the spine and pelvis can cause a lot of discomfort. Dr. Tim Dooley says mid-back pain is the number one complaint he hears about from pregnant women.
“It puts a lot of stress on the thoracic spine and diaphragm as far as breathing,” said Dr. Dooley.
The second biggest complaint is low back pain.
“That is due to the shifting of the spine which makes the pelvic region shift forward which puts a lot of stress on the SI joints. At that point, you get a lot of referred pain down the buttock and down the legs,” said Dr. Dooley.
He says chiropractic adjustments will help shift the pelvis back alleviating that pain.
Both Dr. O’Bryan and Dr. Dooley typically treat women who are beyond their second trimester once a week. They also teach proper stretches and exercises that can help with discomfort too.
